Ingredients Notes
Here are the ingredients we use in this recipe and the brands we like to use. You can use other brands, just know we tested this great recipe with certain ones. Get more info like the quantities needed at the bottom of the post.
- Full Fat Coconut Milk- You must use the full-fat coconut milk, it's how you get the creamy factor for this mousse and helps it turn out properly. Chilling it is ESSENTIAL also. Don't skip that step. We like to use Native Forest from Edward and Sons Trading Company since it's Gluten Free, vegan, dairy free, kosher, and more. You can see more on their policy on being gluten free and more on their website.
- Powdered Sugar
- Vanilla Extract- always check yours to be sure it's both gf and df. McCormick's has been our go to with safe vanilla extract.
- Cocoa Powder- This is an easy place to find hidden dairy. So, always check your labels. We like to use Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder for rich chocolate flavor, but you can use any cocoa powder that is dairy free.
- Chocolate Shavings- from your favorite dairy free chocolate bar or dairy free chocolate chunks or chocolate chips. There are sooo many options now. Some of our favorites are Enjoy Life Chocolate Bars (free from 14 allergens!), No Whey Foods Chocolate Bars, or a No Whey Foods Semisweet Dark Bar for a dark chocolate mousse.

So now that we know what we need for our mousse, let's see what equipment might be helpful to making out treat.
Helpful Equipment
Measuring Cups and Spoons- you can always find this set of cups and spoons in our kitchen.
Mixing Bowls- you could also use a stand mixer with the whisk attachment if you aren't using a bowl and an electric mixer
Now that we are prepared with what ingredients and helpful tools we need to make dairy free mousse, let's get down to making it! Here's how:
Prep the coconut milk
First, let's carefully open the coconut milk can use a spoon to remove the thick cream from the inside of the top of the can. Do your best to not remove any of the liquid with the thick cream. It's okay if a small amount gets mixed in.
Place the cream in a large mixing bowl or into the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment for your mixer.
Whip the cream
In the same bowl, add powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Mix using the stand mixer or an electric mixer on high for about 2-3 minutes, until it's thick and creamy.

Set aside 4 Tablespoons of the whipped cream mixture to use as a topping.
Add the chocolate
Use a sifter to sift the cocoa powder and add it to the cream mixture, ensuring there's no cocoa powder clumps.

Beat with the mixer for 1 minute, or until nice and smooth.

Serve the DIY Dairy Free Chocolate Mousse
Transfer the chocolate mixture to a serving bowl and top with the reserved coconut cream if desired. Garnish with chocolate shavings, berries, etc and enjoy.

Storage
For best results, if you aren't eating your mousse immediately after making it, you need to refrigerate it.
Any leftovers should also be refrigerated for up to 2-3 days. It is helpful to give leftovers a good stir before serving.
Due to the nature of the ingredients, you shouldn't let this mousse sit out at room temperature or it could spoil.

Recipe Tips
- If you need help thickening this mixture up, you can also try to add a few egg yolks.
- We haven't used a different cream yet with this vegan mousse recipe. We've only tested this recipe with coconut cream, not almond milk, soy milk, or other non-dairy milk alternatives. We really think the cream is what you need, not just a milk substitute to make this thick and creamy. We have seen other recipes that use the milk alternatives only, no cream, and that's when they need the egg yolks, whites, and other thickeners to get a good consistency. We prefer this version so it's safe for those who need an egg-free diet too. Sometimes other versions even require you to chill the mousse for two or more hours. Our recipe can be enjoyed right away.
- Make this even creamier by adding some dairy free heavy cream or heavy whipping cream.

Substitutions and Variations
- No Sugar Added Version. If you don't want to use powdered sugar, you can make this a no sugar added treat by using whole, natural maple syrup.
- Change Garnishes. Instead of berries or coconut cream for toppings, you could try melted chocolate, dairy free of course. Use your favorite dairy free baking chips. We like Toll House Allergen Free or Enjoy Life Chocolate Chunks. Or serve with some homemade chocolate ganache.
- Dress it up. While this classic chocolate mousse has a rich chocolate flavor, you could change it up to include espresso powder for an even more decadent flavor.

What is coconut cream? Where do you find it in the can of coconut milk?
Coconut cream is a thick, rich, and creamy component that is extracted from coconut milk.
It is made by refrigerating a can of coconut milk and then skimming off the thick layer of cream that rises to the top of a can of coconut milk.
When you open a can of coconut milk, you will notice that the cream and the liquid are separated. The cream is usually found at the top of the can, while the liquid is at the bottom.
It's important to note that not all brands of canned coconut milk will have a thick layer of cream, so it's best to look for brands that are known for their creamy consistency.
Can I make this in advance?
Yes, you can make this up to a day in advance. Store it in the refrigerator until you're ready to enjoy it.

How to serve this Mousse
Serve this chocolate mousse with any of your other favorite desserts.
We think it would be incredible with our Oreo Ice Cream Cake, served alongside a slice of Strawberry Cake, or served with a slice of Chocolate Cream Pie!
