chocolate breakable heart ingredients
- dairy free semisweet chocolate-- we use Enjoy Life Semisweet Mini Chips or Chunks and Nestle Toll House Allergen-Free Morsels found at Walmart. You can also choose to melt dark chocolate or dairy free white chocolate morsels.
- coconut oil-- this can be omitted if needed. Using coconut oil with melted chocolate will harden the chocolate faster and a little thicker. The coconut oil makes the chocolate act like a chocolate magic shell. It's not essential — and doesn't add much flavor at all, but we recommend it because it makes the chocolate much smoother to work with.
- optional-- festive sprinkles {we use the Sweets Indeed brand which does contain soy}, edible glitter, natural red/white/pink jimmies,

- geometric heart mold-- there are several to choose from on Amazon. We would recommend purchasing yours ASAP. This is the mold we have. It is super easy to use and the perfect size for our loved ones. We have stuffed ours with all sorts of treasure and goodies {keep scrolling for ideas!}. Most molds, including ours, came with two mini wooden hammers, letter mold, number mold, and two droppers.
- saucepan or large microwave-safe bowl
- mini squeeze bottles-- we use this to drizzle the melted chocolate across the heart and to fill the number and letter molds
how do I make a chocolate breakable heart
Melt dairy free chocolate over the stove top on low or in the microwave, stirring often.
Once the chocolate has completely melted, pour into the inside of the mold. Swirl the chocolate in all directions around the mold. Use the back of a spoon or paintbrush to coat the sides well.
Plate the mold on a plate and refrigerate for 10-15 minutes until the chocolate is hard.
Then gently remove the heart from the mold and repeat the process to create the top heart.
Also add chocolate to any words, numbers, or mini hearts included with your set. We recommend filling those smaller cavities with melted chocolate from a mini squeeze bottle. After filling the letter or number, use a toothpick to go through the mold opening to eliminate air bubbles. Transfer this to the refrigerator to harden.
Prepare the box or plate on which you will set the heart. Then place the bottom heart and fill with desired goodies.
Remove the top heart from the refrigerator and gently peel away the mold.
Heat a large plate for 1 minute in the microwave. Place the top heart on the heated plate for a few seconds until you first see chocolate melt. Then place the top heart on top of the bottom heart, lining up the sides perfectly.
Gift this heart as is or add decorative designs to the top.
For adding diagonal zigzag melted chocolate across the top of the heart as shown, place melted chocolate in a mini squeeze bottle. Then with a sweeping motion drizzle melted chocolate across the heart. Add hardened letters or numbers, glitter, and sprinkles to the design. Attach large designs with a drop of melted chocolate.
Gift these Chocolate Breakable Hearts within a day of making. While still tasting luxurious, the dairy free chocolate might start to discolor.
tips for making these hearts
While making these breakable chocolate hearts is fun and rewarding, there are few tips we share to make your experience even easier and better.
First working with dairy free chocolate is much different than using professional chocolate melts loaded with dairy and stabilizers. But while dairy free chocolate is a bit more finicky, you can still create gorgeous, one-of-a-kind gifts loved ones will never forget.
Second we find these DIY treasures might start to discolor after a day or two. The edible hearts will continue to taste luscious, but white spots might start to appear. We suggest gifting these and dairy free chocolate-covered strawberries within a day of making, even better within a few hours. Fresh is best when you're using melted dairy free chocolate.
Also we don't find the droppers in our mold kit helpful. These are used to transfer melted chocolate into the number and letter molds. Instead we use mini squeeze bottles found at Walmart and Amazon.
Most importantly-- once you have transferred the melted chocolate to the small molds, use a toothpick to go through the filled letter and number molds and remove air bubbles. We will be honest -- even after doing this extra step you have to work to get the chocolate into all the tiny crevices of the numbers and letters. And give yourself time to redo any that don't come out as you'd hoped the first time.
And it's definitely worth noting we repeatedly find the mini hearts are super easy to work with and attach to the geometric heart. We like using them so much we make extra to decorate the chocolate-covered strawberries. These look professionally prepared too.
Furthermore-- if you want to take this idea a step further... add festive ribbon to the mini wooden hammer.

- 1 teaspoon coconut oil optional
- optional-- sprinkles, edible glitter
Instructions
- In a medium-sized saucepan, melt dairy free chocolate over the stove top on low or in the microwave, stirring often.
- Once the chocolate has completely melted, pour it into the cavity of the mold. Swirl the chocolate in all directions around the mold. If needed use the back of a spoon or paintbrush to spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold evenly. You want a nice thick layer of chocolate along the sides of the mold.
- Place the mold on a plate and refrigerate for 10-15 minutes until the chocolate is hard.
- Then gently remove the heart from the mold and repeat the process to create the top heart.
- Also add chocolate to any words, numbers, or mini hearts included with your set. We recommend filling those smaller cavities with a mini squeeze bottle. After filling the letter or number, use a toothpick to go through the mold opening to release any air bubbles. Transfer this to the refrigerator as well.
- Prepare the box or plate on which you will place the heart. Then place the bottom heart and fill with desired goodies.
- Remove the top heart from the refrigerator and gentle peel away the mold.
- Heat a large plate for 1 minute in the microwave. Place the top heart on the heated plate for a few seconds until you first see chocolate melt. Then place the top heart on top directly over the bottom heart, lining up the edges perfectly.
- Share this heart as is or add decorative designs over the top.
- For adding diagonal zigzag chocolate drizzle across the top of the heart, pour leftover melted chocolate into a mini squeeze bottle. Then with a sweeping motion drizzle melted chocolate across the heart. Add hardened letters or numbers, glitter, and sprinkles to the design. Attach large designs with a drop of melted chocolate.
- Gift this Breakable Chocolate Heart within a day or two of making. While still tasting luxurious, the dairy free chocolate might start to discolor after that.
