Since we originally made this recipe, Oreo has now made a Gluten Free Oreo which is also dairy free too! So, we have used those a couple of times and the Oreo crumbs are soooo delicious.

Store donuts in a single layer if possible, otherwise you risk messing with the icing on the tops of the donuts if you try to stack them.

Can you freeze homemade donuts?

Yes, you can. But keep in mind that the texture of the frosting may change when you thaw it.

if you want to freeze these donuts, place them on a baking sheet and put them in the freezer for a few hours.

Once they're frozen solid, remove and wrap with plastic wrap before placing them in a freezer safe container or freezer safe bag.

Remove from the freezer and let thaw in the fridge overnight before enjoying your fluffy Oreo donuts again.

FAQ

Can you make Oreo Doughnuts ahead of time?

Chocolate cake donuts can be baked the day before, then just ice and decorate the day of serving.

Keep in mind they'll be the most moist and soft the first day you bake them.

What donut pan should I use?

These pans are super user friendly! Not only that, but they're a breeze to clean up. They are available in a variety of sizes.

If you're purchasing your first pan, we'd recommend a 6-well donut pan.  If you need to purchase one, I'd suggest this one

How do you crush the Oreos?

There are a few ways to do this.

One of the easiest ways is to place the Oreos in a food processor and pulse a few times. You'll have crumbs and crushed pieces.

Another easy way is to toss your Oreo cookies in a ziplock bag and use a rolling pin to roll over the cookies to crush them.

Do I have to use gluten free and dairy free ingredients?

NOPE! We had a friend who can have both gluten and dairy, try this recipe and use gluten and dairy containing ingredients and she said it turned out just fine.

No real substitutions she had to make, no real alterations.

If you can have gluten and dairy and want to use "regular" ingredients, feel free to do so! This recipe should work for you.

Tips for using donut pans

If you're nervous about the donuts popping out of the pan intact, read on.

First, to make these pans a breeze to work with use a quick dusting of non-stick spray before piping them.

After you've baked your delicious donuts, grab a dull knife. Work the knife around the outside of the donut to separate it from the well.

Do this for each donut and then tip the pan upside-down over a cooling rack.

Occasionally, we have used the knife a couple of times to loosen the donuts. It really is the easiest way.

Honestly, they usually pop out without hassle.

Tips for transferring donut batter to pan

If you're looking for tips to pipe the donuts into the pan... one word... Ziploc!

Place your batter into a freezer safe Ziploc bag or just use a normal piping bag.

Cut off one corner of the bag and you're ready to pipe!

Practice does make perfect with piping donuts.  Even using a bag it still took a couple of times to figure it out.

But they looked more like the real thing instantly when using a bag.
