Check out these ingredients below and make a list of anything you need to grab from the store you don’t already have on hand.

frozen hot chocolate ingredients

  • dairy free chocolate chips— our go-to is either Enjoy Life mega chunks/mini chips or the Nestle Toll House Allergen Free Chocolate Chips
  • granulated sugar
  • warm dairy free milk— heated to about 110 degrees Fahrenheit. We use unsweetened almond milk. For this recipe we prefer the refrigerated kind found in the cooler at the grocery store instead of the shelf-stable products. Use your favorite dairy free milk.
  • dairy free hot chocolate mix— two recommendations are Castle Kitchens Double Dutch Hot Chocolate; their allergen statement is here. And Swiss Miss Non-Dairy Hot Cocoa Mix is available here. Tap here for their allergen statement. We haven’t heard back from them regarding the possibility of cross-contamination in the manufacturing process.
  • crushed ice— use ice cubes from your freezer or store-bought ice in the bag.
  • dairy free whipped topping— there are several options; scroll down for suggestion and links
  • optional— dairy free chocolate syrup, chocolate shavings, mini dairy free chocolate chips, sprinkles, or even mini marshmallows
  • optional— add in leftover crushed candy cane bits to the top of the whipped cream or place a candy cane in the drink for decoration and as a beverage stirrer.

is Ready Whip dairy free

No, but Non-Dairy Reddi Wip is! To be exact it’s gluten and dairy free. Here is their allergen statement. You can also use a dollop or two of So Delicious Cocowhip.

can this be made ahead of time

This is best fresh from the blender; however it can be blended ahead of time and placed into serving glasses, then frozen up to an hour ahead of time. Allow to soften on the countertop just before serving and adding those yummy toppings.

should I chill the glasses ahead of time

If you have the time, this is a nice touch. Chilling your serving glasses for 10 minutes will help this drink stay fresh and chilled longer. However, it is not necessary.
